　　1. on the wane

　　wane作动词就有“衰减;减弱”的意思：

　　By the late 70s the band's popularity was beginning to wane.

　　上世纪70年代末，这支乐队的人气开始下滑。

　　作名词wane表示“衰退;月亏;衰退期”，on the wane形容(权力、人气等)衰落，减弱。

　　There are signs that support for the group is on the wane.

　　有迹象表明该党的支持率正日益下降。

　　Sirenia的那首《Winter Land》中就唱到：

　　The summer sun is on the wane again

　　夏日的阳光又一次慢慢消沉

　　2. yesterday

　　在这里yesterday不是昨天，而指的是“近日，日前;往昔”。

　　Nobody's interested in yesterday's pop stars.

　　没人对过气明星感兴趣。

　　It's better to be a has-been than a never-was.

　　宁可过气，也不无闻。

　　3. has-been

　　它的意思是“过气的名人，曾经红极一时的人物”。

　　That performer is a has-been.

　　那位演员曾经红过一阵子。

　　4. over the hill

　　hill是“小山，丘陵”的意思，over the hill就是翻过了山峰，习语意思就是过了巅峰期;在衰退中。

　　Nobody wants to think of themselves as over the hill.

　　没有人希望自己在走下坡路。

　　5. be a nine days' wonder

　　17世纪初，英国作家伯顿(Bohn Henry G.)在其著作《Handbook of Proverbs》中写到：

　　A wonder lasts but nine days，and then the puppy's eyes are open.

　　传说小狗刚出生的时候双目看不见东西，总觉得世界新奇，而九天后其眼睛睁开可视物了，眼前的世界却不如想象中那样美好。

　　be a nine days' wonder可以表示“昙花一现”。

　　As a pop star she was a nine days' wonder: she only made one successful record.

　　她是个昙花一现的歌星, 只录制过一张受欢迎的唱片。
